Located in Central Africa, the Virunga is one of the most beautiful regions endowed with incredible biodiversity! Also referred to as the Virungas, this region hosts more than half of the world’s remaining population of the mountain gorillas. The Virunga is home to three national parks;
- Virunga National Park Africa’s oldest national park, and an UNESCO World Heritage Site, categorized as ‘endangered’.
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in South Western Uganda
- Volcanoes National Park (also known as Parc Nationale des Volcan in most guides) in Northern Rwanda.
Within all these national parks, you can go gorilla tracking all year round. The parks are open and there is sustainable tourism that has been developed following strong guidelines aimed at promoting ecotourism.
